The resort
A belle-époque spa town wedged into an alpine gorge, Bad Gastein tumbles in terraces around its famous waterfall and the radon-rich thermal springs that made it a luxury resort back in the 19th century. It is part of Ski amadé, with ~208 km of pistes in the Gasteinertal split across Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel, Graukogel and high-alpine Sportgastein, between ~1,000 and 2,686 m. You reach it via Munich (MUC) and then by ÖBB train along the Tauern line (Tauernbahn), with a station right in the town.

The village
The historic centre clings to the slopes in tiers, cut through by the spectacular Bad Gastein waterfall (Gasteiner Wasserfall) and dotted with grand belle-époque hotels and thermal baths. It is a dual resort — skiing by day, thermal baths and a refined atmosphere at the end of the day — with the Stubnerkogelbahn setting off just steps from the train station.
