The resort

At 1,224 m in the Aosta Valley, on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, Courmayeur is one of Italy's oldest and most elegant mountain resorts. A spa and mountaineering village since the 19th century — the historic starting point for ascents of Mont Blanc and the birthplace of the mountain-guide corporation — it has grown into a chic winter destination while keeping a stone-and-timber centre with the village character that purpose-built resorts lack. Reached from Geneva (~1h50 by road, via the Mont Blanc tunnel).

Fly from

The village

The pedestrian heart is Via Roma, a street of boutiques, cafés and mountain restaurants beneath the Mont Blanc massif, with some of the finest après-ski and dining in the Alps. The ski area rises above the village and the neighbouring hamlet of Dolonne — across the sunny Plan Chécrouit and shaded Val Veny sectors, reached by the Courmayeur cable car in the centre and the Dolonne gondola. La Thuile, with its cross-border area into France, is a short drive away for those wanting more pistes.
