The resort
Livigno is a remote Italian resort at 1,816 m high in the Valtellina, near the Swiss border — nicknamed "Little Tibet" for its altitude, isolation and guaranteed snow from late November to early May. It has been a duty-free zone since the 16th century: no VAT on fuel, fashion, tobacco or ski gear, which has made it a bargain destination for shopping and skiing. Its ~115 km of pistes split across two sectors — Carosello 3000 (west) and Mottolino (east, with a world-class snowpark) — united by a single "Skipass Livigno" and a free ski-bus, though they are not linked by lift.

The village
The town stretches for several kilometres along the valley floor, with a main street lined by cars and over 250 duty-free shops — from ski brands to fashion — that make gear rental and shopping among the cheapest in the Alps. Après-ski is lively, with bars and restaurants scattered along the street. An honest note: Livigno is a long way from any airport — the transfer from Malpensa (MXP) is around 4h by road, over the Passo del Foscagno; allow for that time and for snow chains or winter tyres, which are compulsory in winter.
