The resort

Obertauern is a ski circuit with a village inside it: everything sits at 1,740 m on top of the Tauernpass, 100 km of lift-linked pistes circle the bowl — the Tauernrunde runs in both directions from 11 entry points — and it is the most snow-reliable village in the Austrian Alps (112 cm average snow on the ground in January). Fly to Munich; train to Radstadt and Postbus 280 up to the pass.

The village

Hotels line the pass road and the pistes run to their doors — genuine ski-in/ski-out, no car and no morning bus. 61 of the 100 km are blue, perfect for racking up relaxed kilometres; Gamsleiten 2, one of Europe's steepest pistes, keeps experts honest. At night, classic Austrian hut après-ski — louder than its family image suggests, quieter than Ischgl.
