The resort

Schruns is the gateway to the Montafon, the valley you can still reach by train: fly to Zurich, ride the Railjet to Bludenz, and the little electric railway from 1905 drops you in the village centre, five minutes' walk from the Hochjoch gondola. Above it spreads Silvretta Montafon, Vorarlberg's biggest ski area — 140 lift-linked km across Hochjoch and Nova, freeride routes, a serious snowpark and broad reds — priced well under the Swiss valleys across the border.

The village

Schruns is a real Austrian market town — cafés, a market square, the family-run hotels where Hemingway spent his winters in the 1920s revising The Sun Also Rises — not a purpose-built resort. Snow in the village (700 m) is decoration: the skiing lives between 1,400 and 2,430 m and everyone rides a gondola up. Après is low-key — umbrella bars at the valley stations, mountain huts like the Nova Stoba; people come for the skiing.
