The resort
Serre Chevalier is one of the largest linked ski areas in the French Southern Alps — 250 km of pistes on a single pass, spread across four villages of the Guisane valley: Briançon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Le Monêtier-les-Bains. The lower slopes wind through larch forest, while the sunny, south-facing summits enjoy generous sunshine, with 80% of the pistes above 2,000 m. A rare advantage in the Alps: the gateway town of Briançon — with its UNESCO-listed Vauban ramparts — has its own train station, including the overnight train from Paris.

Fly from
The village
The four villages retain the authenticity of the Hautes-Alpes — stone, timber and a relaxed pace, far from purpose-built resorts. Le Monêtier-les-Bains, the highest and quietest, is home to the Les Grands Bains thermal spa, perfect for unwinding after skiing. This is the sunny mountain of the South: more sunshine, a laid-back atmosphere and a string of villages each with its own character, rather than a single cluster.
