The resort
Alpe d'Huez skis on a south-facing plateau at 1,860 m nicknamed the "Island of the Sun" (l'Île au Soleil) — around 300 days of sunshine a year over the ~250 km Grand Domaine Ski that links six villages. A pioneer of French skiing, it is crowned by the Pic Blanc at 3,330 m, where the legendary Sarenne begins — the longest black run in the Alps (~16 km, 2,000 m of vertical). Out of season, the 21 hairpins up from Bourg-d'Oisans are a fabled Tour de France climb. Reached via Lyon (~2h15) plus a direct Ben's Bus, or by train to Grenoble plus bus.

The village
The resort is compact and sunny, climbing the slope in three tiers (Vieil Alpe, the centre and Bergers) with almost everything ski-in/ski-out. The centre gathers the DMC des Marmottes, the Rif Nel and Télécentre lifts, restaurants, rental shops and lively après-ski; the higher Bergers area opens straight onto the high-altitude pistes. Auris, Oz and Vaujany offer quieter, more family-friendly alternatives, all on the same lift pass.
