The resort
Sestriere is Italy's highest town, at 2,035 m on the col of the same name, and the gateway to the Via Lattea — 400 km of linked pistes crossing the border between Italy's Piedmont and Montgenèvre in France on a single pass. Reliable snow, plenty of sun and wide south-facing pistes made it the venue for the downhill and giant slalom at the 2006 Winter Olympics (and the 1997 World Championships). This is large-scale skiing with a competition pedigree.

The village
Unlike organically grown alpine villages, Sestriere was purpose-built in the 1930s at the behest of Giovanni Agnelli, founder of FIAT — its two round towers remain the resort's symbol. It is a compact, lively resort, with après-ski, restaurants and services concentrated by the pistes. Turin is about 2h by car, and Milan-Malpensa airport (MXP) handles the international connections.
